Goodbye – Odaiba Gundam! The Gundam Statue in the Odaiba area of Tokyo, is a 18-meter-tall robot model of a Gundam in Shiokaze Park outside the DiverCity Tokyo Plaza mall. It’s attracted not only animation fans, but the locals and thousands of international travelers, becoming a legitimate landmark in Tokyo. However, the Gundam official has announced a sad news that on March 5, 2017, is the last day the full-size Gundam will be on display in front of the Diver City Tokyo. Moreover, the Gundam-themed museum that located inside DiverCity Tokyo Plaza mall, Gundam Front Tokyo is also scheduled to close on April 5 of 2017. So, Gundam fans has to grasp the final chance to visit the giant Gundam Statue.
GUNDAM FRONT Tokyo
At the main entrance of Diver City Tokyo stands a 59 foot (18 meter) tall 1:1 scale Gundam RG 1/1 RX-78-2 Ver. GFT, which is one of the hit-spots around Odaiba area. It was built in 2009 as part of the Green Tokyo Gundam Project and the celebration of Gundam 30th anniversary, and was displayed in Odaiba as limited exhibition. However, it attracted over 4 million of visitors within 52 days which makes it become a hit-spot around the city. After that limited exhibition, the Gundam Statue was once displayed in Shizuoka prefecture. In 2012, for the opening of GUNDAM FRONT Tokyo in 7th floor of Diver City Tokyo , the Gundam Statue returned to Odaiba again, and it already become a must-visit spot of Tokyo for tourists now.
Well, Gundam-fans should not be so sad, because the Gundam official announced that “the time has finally come for the world to actually see a Gundam robot that is capable of moving“, which means the next time we see the giant Gundam Statute will be a moving-Gundam. That sounds great idea! The official also asking fans of the franchise to submit their suggestions for the project and production will start in 2018.
